If you don’t have kids you may not know that this week is special.  But this whole week is Read Across America week.  It coincides with Dr. Seuss’s birthday – probably the single most influential author of all time.  Think about it.  Adults and kids alike know and love Dr. Seuss books.  “Green Eggs and Ham” ring a bell?  How about “Cat in the Hat”?  “Oh the Places You Will Go!”  (I know that after at least one of those you started sighting from memory your most loved quotes.)

Like many other schools in the U.S. this week, Little Bear’s school is celebrating.  Each grade level is doing something different and special to commemorate.  The kindergarten teachers sent out a secret email to all kinder parents, asking for Mystery Readers.  (Of course I obliged!)  And for the all of the younger classes, Dr. Seuss characters have popped in during lunch time.

Needless to say, Little Bear has been super excited about school all week.  Each day has had a different dress-up theme and she knows that there is another Mystery Reader coming.  

I’ve kinda gotten wrapped up in all the excitement as well.

Let’s just say our book collection has grown exponentially this week.

I got a little carried away searching for “the right book” for my read.

To my defense though, most of the books I bought at a consignment sale for next to nothing.  Which I thought was a pretty good deal considering a vast majority of the titles where older and/or expensive titles.

Oh well, you can never have too many books, I always say.  🙂

I will probably be extra busy in the coming week reading all the new books to Little Bear.  But I don’t mind.  Reading is knowledge and knowledge is power, (to reference Francis Bacon).

Foster a thirst for reading at a young age.  It is so important.  Let Read Across America Week be a jump-start for you and you’re family.  Maybe you begin with just one small book a day.  Just see where it takes you.
